Puppies grow fast, and what they eat in their first year shapes their health for life. The good news: feeding a puppy well is simple if you follow a few rules.
Choose a food made for puppies
Puppy food has more protein, fat and calcium than adult food. Look for a recipe labeled “for growth” or “for puppies”, with real meat as the first ingredient. Large-breed puppies need a large-breed puppy formula to protect their joints.
How often to feed
- 8 to 12 weeks: 4 meals a day
- 3 to 6 months: 3 meals a day
- 6 to 12 months: 2 meals a day
How much to give
Start with the amount on the bag for your puppy's weight and age, then adjust. You should be able to feel the ribs without seeing them. If your puppy leaves food, give a little less; if it looks thin, give a little more.
Treats and water
Treats should be no more than 10% of what your puppy eats in a day. Fresh water must always be available. When your puppy turns one (or 18 months for big breeds), switch slowly to adult food over 7 to 10 days.
